Q. Name as many brain diseases as you can that cause intranuclear inclusions.
A. Viral diseases are the most common diseases to cause intranuclear inclusions. This includes:
*herpes virus (Pseudorabies, Aujeszy’s disease, Canine herpes virus encephalitis, equine herpes virus 1, bovine herpes encephalitis)
*Borna virus (AKA “staggering disease” found in horses, sheep and cats) has primarily intranuclear inclusions and rarely cytoplasmic inclusions. The inclusions are called “Joest-Degen” bodies.
*Adenoviruses (contagious hepatitis in dogs)
*Paramyxovirus can be intranuclear or intracytoplasmic (canine distemper virus)
Rarely metabolic or degenerative diseases can cause intranuclear inclusions.
