Radiographs 3

Q.  A 10-year-old female spayed 18kg female spayed mixed breed dog presents to your practice after being hit by a car.  The vehicle was observed to hit the back end of the dog while traveling at 10mph.  Immediately afterwards, she was non-ambulatory with Schiff-Sherrington posture.  You take a lateral and horizontal beam radiograph of the spine.  What is your diagnosis?

A.  There appears to be acute T10, T12, and L2 vertebral body compression fractures, with probable right ilial fracture. Although the dog was hit by a car, the skeletal structures appear to be generally osteopenic which may have allowed for pathologic fractures induced by the accident.  Additional gastric dilatation and possible dorsocaudal lung field changes supportive of pulmonary contusions are also present.
